Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment that can help with an array of aliments. As an experienced acupuncturist in Toledo, Dr. Schwan simulates the qi(pronounced ‘chi) energy to encourage the body’s ability to self heal. Learn more about the acupuncture treatments below.

See what acupuncture can do for you!

We use a state-of-the-art computerized system to digitally image acupuncture meridians. This helps us determine physical problems. There are 12 main acupuncture meridians (channels of energy flow) in your body. These meridians are right-sided and left-sided, so there are actually a total of 24 meridians or channels of energy flow. When one or more of the meridians are out of balance (energy is either too high or too low), it causes a disturbance in the normal function of your body, resulting in the symptoms or disease process that you are experiencing.

This instrument electronically measures – safely and quickly – all the major meridians. This helps us formulate a treatment plan tailored just to your condition.

Acupuncture, frequently combined with herbal medicine, has been used for centuries to treat some but not all causes of infertility. For example, acupuncture and herbs will not work to address tubal adhesions which can occur as a result of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. However, in this situation, an individual could still benefit from acupuncture and herbs because of the potential effect of improved ovarian and follicular function. Additionally, acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining.

When should acupuncture treatment begin?

Acupuncture is similar to physical therapy in that it is a process-oriented method of medical intervention. It is better to do more than less. Patients are commonly treated for three to four months before progressing to insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), or donor-egg transfer. This pacing of treatment seems to have a therapeutic effect.

When should I stop getting acupuncture?

Typically most miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy. Consequently, treatment of patients may often last through week twelve to help prevent miscarriage.

What are the risks of using acupuncture?

There are minimal risks in using acupuncture for fertility treatment. The risk of miscarriage may increase if incorrect acupuncture points are used during pregnancy. This is one reason why those choosing to include acupuncture in their treatment regimen should only be treated by an acupuncturist who specializes in treating fertility disorders. Acupuncture is generally safe regardless of a person’s medical history.

What types of fertility patients typically get acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be used to treat any type of fertility disorder including spasmed tubes. Spasmed tubes are often de-spasmed with acupuncture, though blocked tubes will not respond to acupuncture. Acupuncture is often combined with herbal remedies to treat elevated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained (idiopathic) infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia (when not caused by a prolactinoma), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with annovulatory cycles, and male factor including men affected with sperm-DNA-fragmentation.

I’m afraid of needles! What can I do?

Needles are only one way to stimulate acupuncture points. There are a number of other ways for the ‘needle-impaired’ to receive acupuncture. For example, in our office we can stick tiny rubberized electrodes to the skin. A small current is then run through the electrodes and in this way the acupuncture point is painlessly stimulated without breaking the skin.

This technique is frequently utilized for “facial-lift” acupuncture procedures. But there is no reason that any condition can not be treated in this manner. The process is more time consuming to setup than simple needling, and some practitioners feel better results may be achieved by the deeper stimulation that needles provide. The choice is the patient’s.

Other forms of needle-less treatment include stimulation with an electrical or mechanical probe, cold laser, or heating moxa over acupuncture points.

stop smokingUse acupuncture to stop smoking and other addictions.

Acupuncture is used as the primary mode of treatment in the most successful detoxification program in the United States for drug, alcohol, and nicotine addictions. Researchers in Norway reported: “Smokers who want to kick the habit can indeed find success with the help of acupuncture (Reuters Health).”

Dr. Schwan has developed unique treatment formulas to stop smoking. Treatment includes traditional ear therapy with additional body acupuncture points to enhance the effectiveness of ear acupuncture for those highly resistant patients.

Just one pack a day leads to an average cost of $120 per month or almost $1500 per year. And that doesn’t include the enormous cost of later health problems. Are you ready to quit?

How does acupuncture help you stop smoking?

Acupuncture can detoxify the body of nicotine. Researchers have confirmed that smokers develop higher levels of nicotine-induced endorphins, and acupuncture stimulates the nervous system naturally to regulate the amount of endorphins in the body and helps clear away nicotine buildup. Unlike the patch, acupuncture actually rids the body of nicotine instead of adding more to it.

Acupuncture works in addiction therapy because it stimulates the release of endorphins which is the same ‘pleasure chemical’ stimulated by addictive substances such as nicotine or alcohol. This aids in decreasing cravings.

In addition to the traditional acupuncture treatment, Dr. Schwan performs a computerized diagnostic evaluation of all the main meridians. In this way a total evaluation of the patient can be made and underlying problems that may be contributing to the addictions can simultaneously be addressed.

It is important to select an experienced acupuncture specialist. It is necessary that you attend a specialist who is specifically trained in smoking/addiction cessation treatment. Try to find a well-known and established acupuncture clinic skilled in addiction therapy so that you are comfortable with the service provided. Dr. Schwan has performed hundreds of addiction-related acupuncture treatments and supportive care.

How many treatments will I need?

Best results are obtained with eight, one-hour sessions over a four week period. Of course, the number of treatments depends on how many years and how heavily you smoke. It takes two weeks without ANY cigarettes to rid your body of the nicotine receptors that signal the cravings. Based on Dr. Schwan’s years of experience, after four weeks 90% of people find the taste of cigarettes and second-hand smoke begin to taste and smell awful and they lose their cravings for it.

Cost Savings for acupuncture to stop smoking?

Cost savings in not buying cigarettes is substantial. Just one cigarette in the morning, a couple more at break and lunch..after dinner..a couple before bed…. is a one-pack-a-day habit.

That averages about $120 a month or nearly $1500 a year!

And that doesn’t include the enormous cost of later health problems.

Governments are constantly increasing “sin taxes” on cigarettes promising to spiral the cost of a pack ever higher.

Polls show that 70% of smokers want to quit. Are you ready to quit?

stressStress is the number one cause of disease today. If you are under a lot of stress in Toledo, it leads to a severe reduction in your immune system which, in turn, allows external pathogens to take over. Stress directly induces anxiety attacks, blues, depression, irritability, insomnia, hypertension, stroke, heart attacks, and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and many auto-immune diseases.

How can acupuncture help? It helps by stimulating the release of pain-killing chemicals called endorphins and enkephalins. These natural chemicals help soothe and calm the body. Acupuncture also helps clear cortisol from the blood. This adrenal chemical should only be in the blood when one is ready to “fight or run,” but in people with chronic stress cortisol levels do not drop to normal and remain elevated for months on end.

Our office utilizes acupuncture in combination with a tailored program of nutritional herbs and supplements to naturally relieve feelings of anxiety and depression as well as to give the patient a feeling of well-being and self-confidence. Treatments can help you stay calm and relaxed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an appropriate and effective treatment for emotional and psychological disorders including stress, depression, and anxiety.

Our staff has put together an easy to understand and follow core program that consists of 10 easy-to-follow behavior modification steps. No fancy diets – eat what you want!

Dr. Schwan incorporates the normal appetite suppression points but, as well, treats the entire body to address other factors such as stress, emotional imbalance, digestion, compulsive disorders, water balance, etc., that may be contributing to the weight problem.

By being so thorough, Dr. Schwan believes you receive your best chance of achieving your long-term weight reduction goals and blossoming the ‘New You’ within!

Acupuncture for weight loss?

The body is very tricky. When you try to diet, the body conserves calories. If you try multiple diets in a row, the body will actually gain more weight over the long term than if the person did not try and diet at all!

Many studies show acupuncture at number three among effective techniques for sustained, long-term weight loss. (The first two being gastric bypass surgery and lap band surgery.)

The patients who achieve the best long-term sustained weight reduction with acupuncture are involved in programs that include significant lifestyle coaching. What good is it to loose weight if bad habits lead to gaining it all back?

How much weight will I lose?

We measure progress a little differently with our program. Rather than using a scale, we measure the girth of the patient with each visit. This gives us the most accurate barometer of fat burn.

Taking a patient’s weight can be deceiving because of water metabolism. When you first go on any restricted calorie diet, the body responds by dumping water. Grapefruit diets, kumquat diets, banana diets all stimulate massive diureses (water loss) via the kidneys. So a week after you start the latest, greatest diet you jump on a scale and are ecstatic to see you lost 15 pounds or more! You continue the diet religiously and two weeks after that you jump on the scale again only to find you actually gained back a few pounds. Disillusioned, you drop off the diet and regain all the weight and more…

What’s going on? Well the first two weeks your weight loss was entirely water moving out of the body. In fact, it takes two weeks just to START BURNING FAT! After the initial two weeks, the body rebalanced its water and began to retain it again, contributing to the apparent weight gain.

With Dr. Schwan’s program, there is no need for restrictive diets at all. Instead of concentrating on a fluctuating water weight, we graph out successive girth measurements which reflect almost entirely fat retention. Over time, the body slims and the ‘New You’ emerges.

Putting things in perspective, patients with gastric bypass typically lose about eight pounds per month their first year. Lap band patients lose closer to six pounds per month.

Our patients tend to lose, on average, about 6.4 pounds per month on our program.

While this may not be particularly impressive sounding numbers when viewed next to advertisements promising ‘LOSE TWENTY POUNDS IN TWENTY DAYS!” one must remember that this is SUSTAINED long-term weight loss – and that is all the difference!

Cost Savings of acupuncture for weight loss?

Cost savings for food is substantial. The average adult spends about $400 per month on food at home and out at restaurants. We have seen this amount cut to $150 per month in most of our cases. Thus, the ongoing treatment is paid for the most part in substantial monthly food bill savings. What is it worth to you to find the ‘New You’ inside?

Cold Laser Therapy

The cold laser is a painless, sterile, non-invasive, low level light treatment used for a variety of pain symptoms. Without the use of heat, the Cold Laser helps transport oxygen to the damaged cells to promote healing (specifically the powerhouse of the cell, the mitochondria). In combination with exercise, stretches and other appropriate treatment, healing time is significantly reduced. Cold Laser therapy treatment is performed by a qualified staff member and usually last between 10-15 minutes. The Cold Laser helps promote healing of the cells, it is not designed to strengthen or stretch the affected area. Therefore, it is imperative that treatment be performed in conjunction with Acupuncture, Chiropractic, or Physical Therapy for maximum result.
